Dr. Phil Golson is President and Director of the Garden Route Arts, Communication and Education (GRACE, Inc.) based in Knysna. He has taught for over 31 years at primary, high school, varsity and University levels. A management team member for Knysna Hope, he has served as Vice-Chairman of Knysna High School and Knysna Primary School School Governing Bodies, past Associate Professor of Music at Clearwater Christian College (FL) and past Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin (La Crosse). Other positions included Teaching Assistant at The University of South Carolina, Adjunct Lecturer at Viterbo University (WI), and The University of South Carolina-Sumter. He has served as a doctoral committee advisor for the University of the Free State (Bloemfontein) in the Odeion Skool vir Musiek. He is involved with a high school for exploited and at-risk girls in Tanzania called Tumaini Jipya School for Girls.
Guest residencies and lectureships include The University of Stellenbosch, The University of the Free State and Nelson Mandela University. He has provided musical training to military elements from Kenya, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa at the Simonstown Navy Base and the South African Army Band, Cape Town. Early teaching experience includes Grade 5 through Matric level Choirs, Bands, Orchestras, private tutelage, ensembles, and private tutelage or lessons. He has taught in both traditional classrooms and designed and administered online music courses for distance learners.
He has led orchestras, wind bands, marching band, brass ensembles, vocal choirs, and extensive chamber ensembles. Dr. Golson has performed extensively as conductor, clinician, guest artist in conducting as well as player of Tuba, Euphonium, Piano and is a minister of music. He has played for and conducted music for various recordings. He holds degrees in conducting and music education from The University of South Carolina and Bob Jones University. He was the tuba player for 12 years with The Artisans in Brass Quintet, and 2 years as Euphonium with the Willson Tuba Quartet.
Dr. Golson has been past member of the Music Educators National Conference, College Music Society, The International Society for Music Education, and the International Tuba and Euphonium Association.
He has served on music/academic tours to Niger, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, Haiti, and South Africa. Other SA performance venues include Grey Jr. Boys, Oakhill, Montessori, Knysna Primary, Riverwood (Stepping Stones), Knysna High School, Knysna Secondary High School, Percy Mdala High School, Chris Nissen Primary, Fraisig Primary, Sunridge Primary Plettenberg Bay Primary. He has also helped organize and lead local Carol Sing events for more than 10 years, been a judge for the Eistedfodd festival, and artist at various church events.
His interests include Manchester United, camping, Driving a Land Rover, aviation history, and church music history. Kristen, his wife of 32 years, has been a companion to over 35 countries, they have three adult daughters and love serving the local church in Knysna.
