Dr. Phil Golson is the current President and Director of the Garden Route Arts, Communication and Education (GRACE, Inc.) based in Knysna. He was recently an Associate Professor of Music at Clearwater Christian College (FL) and past Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin (La Crosse). Other positions include Teaching Assistant at The University of South Carolina, Adjunct Lecturer at Viterbo University (WI), and The University of South Carolina-Sumter. Recent guest residencies and lectureships include The University of Stellenbosch and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (PE). His early teaching experience includes Grade 5 through Matric level Choirs, Bands, private tutelage, ensembles, and lessons. He has taught in both traditional classroom settings, on behalf of Air Force personnel, and designed and implemented online music appreciation pedagogy courses for distance learners.
Dr. Golson has performed with the La Crosse Chamber Brass, the Artisans in Brass Quintet, the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra, the LSO Brass Quintet, and the Southern Lakes Brass Quartet. He is a past member of the Willson Tuba Quartet. He has played for and conducted music for various recording CDs. He holds degrees in conducting and music education from The University of South Carolina and Bob Jones University. He was awarded the Outstanding Musicianship Award from the Tau Beta Sigma Music Sorority, honorary membership in the Zeta Chi chapter of the Kappa Kappa Psi National Band Fraternity, and membership in the Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society.
He has organized and accompanied music and upliftment tours to Thailand, Turkey, Haiti, and South Africa with fellow musicians and educators.
His interests include travel, aviation, technology, and church music history. His wife of 21 years has been a companion to over 22 countries, and they enjoy rearing three daughters and serving the local church in Knysna.
